Analysis of the match between Genoa and Napoli
Napoli were eliminated early from the Champions League at the league phase after failing to finish in the Top 24. This outcome is hardly surprising given Antonio Conte’s recent track record in European competitions. Naturally, Napoli’s board cannot be satisfied, as an early exit also means a significant financial loss. However, from another perspective, this setback could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the southern Italian side.
In reality, Conte’s greatest strength lies in long domestic title races rather than the demanding environment of the Champions League. While being distracted by European commitments – despite the predictable outcome – Napoli lost ground in the Serie A title race. Coupled with long-term injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne, Napoli now find themselves nine points behind league leaders Inter.
That gap puts Napoli at serious risk of dropping out of the Top 4, which would result in major financial consequences if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Therefore, being freed from European competition to focus entirely on Serie A at this stage could be seen as a necessary and sensible move.
In the upcoming round, Napoli will face Genoa – a club they shared a close bond with for nearly 40 years before the relationship collapsed in 2019. Since then, their meetings have been fiercely contested. Genoa’s recent resurgence under Daniele De Rossi was halted by a 2-3 defeat away to Lazio last round. Facing Napoli, a side renowned for their ability to consistently collect points in Serie A, will be a stern test that could expose Genoa’s true level.
