Analysis of the match between Manchester City and Fulham
In the most recent round, Manchester City were on the verge of falling too far behind in the title race, with only about 10 minutes remaining and still trailing Arsenal by nine points. However, Pep Guardiola’s men showed their resilience at the perfect moment. The dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool not only kept their title hopes alive but also carried special significance, as under the Spanish tactician, City have rarely emerged victorious at this venue.
The gap to Arsenal has now been reduced to six points, and if they defeat Fulham, City could pile even more pressure on the league leaders by cutting the deficit to just three points before Arsenal travel to Brentford on Thursday. Returning to the Etihad is a major boost for Guardiola and his players. In their last 17 Premier League home matches, they have collected 44 out of a possible 51 points (14 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss) and are currently on an 11-match unbeaten run at home (9 wins, 2 draws). Only Sunderland boast a longer ongoing unbeaten home streak.
On the other hand, Fulham remain in contention for a European spot as the season enters its decisive phase. However, a dip in form — with three defeats in their last four matches — has slowed their push for a top-seven finish. After beating Brighton 2-1, Fulham suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Leeds, a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, and most recently a 2-1 home loss to Everton despite taking the lead.
That result marked Marco Silva’s side’s 11th defeat of the season, dropping them to 10th place with 34 points. A trip to face Manchester City therefore looks extremely challenging, especially considering Fulham have won just 3 of their 44 away matches against teams currently in the top three of the Premier League (9 draws, 32 losses). Those rare victories came against Manchester United (October 2003), Tottenham (March 2013), and Chelsea (December 2024).
