Analysis of the match between Sweden and Greece
Sweden endured a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign, failing to win a single match while recording just two draws and four defeats. As a result, they finished at the bottom of Group B with only two points. Nevertheless, thanks to an impressive UEFA Nations League campaign and convincing performances in the play-offs, the Nordic side still secured a place at the world's biggest football tournament.
Under the guidance of Graham Potter, Sweden has regained the confidence of its supporters. The English coach led his team past Ukraine and Poland in March to book a ticket to the World Cup, marking their return after missing out on the tournament in Qatar four years ago. However, the recent 1-3 friendly defeat to Norway, despite the absence of Erling Haaland, highlighted that Sweden still has plenty of issues to address.
Defensive instability remains a major concern for the hosts. Since Potter took charge, Sweden has yet to keep a clean sheet, conceding 11 goals in five matches. Furthermore, they have won only two of their last nine games since September 2025. Therefore, this match represents an important opportunity for Sweden to regain winning momentum and confidence before heading to the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Greece failed to achieve its goal of returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2014 after finishing third in its qualifying group behind Scotland and Denmark. As a result, the June friendlies mainly serve as preparation and experimentation ahead of the UEFA Nations League group stage in September.
Head coach Ivan Jovanovic is not under significant pressure regarding results at the moment. However, Greece's form has been far from convincing, with only one win in their last seven matches. Consequently, the visitors will be eager to secure a positive result to build momentum for the challenges ahead.
